Santander hires BlackRock executive as CEO of global asset management

Santander Asset Management (SAM) has hired Samantha Ricciardi, Head of Strategic Coverage and Business Development at BlackRock for Europe, Middle East and Africa, as the new Global CEO, according to an internal memo viewed by Citywire selector sister site Citywire Americas.

“Samantha was selected by the group’s executives, SAM board members and external advisors, following an intensive selection of internal and external candidates,” wrote Victor Matarranz, Global Head of Management of assets and insurance of Santander, in a letter to the staff.

“She brings international experience in fund distribution and management and in business development… She will certainly bring new energy to SAM’s growth in this new chapter,” he added.

Ricciardi (pictured) had spent over 11 years at BlackRock, most recently as head of strategic clients and solutions for the EMEA region.

Previously, she worked as Country Manager for BlackRock in Mexico, where she oversaw a platform managing over $ 70 billion (€ 62 billion) in assets and chaired a number of acquisitions and product launches.

Prior to working at BlackRock, she served as Country Manager for Mexico at Schroders between 2007 and 2010 and worked at Citi as a mutual fund manager at the group’s international private bank, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Ricciardi succeeds Mariano Belinky, the former global CEO of asset management at Santander, who left in October. Belinky has since joined private equity group Motive Partners where he will focus on delivering strategic value to the firm’s investment mandate, according to an announcement regarding his move.

A BlackRock spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for information about Ricciardi’s replacement.
