Texas border affairs
Austin, TX – Last week, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan appointed Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. to the Windstorm Insurance Legislative Funding and Funding Structure Oversight Board. This board oversees the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) and is responsible for studying TWIA’s current funding structure as well as determining how catastrophic risk pools in other states operate. The purpose of this committee is to provide recommendations and proposals for establishing and implementing sustainable funding and a sustainable funding structure for TWIA.
“I want to thank President Phelan for giving me this opportunity to better advocate for sufficient, adequate and affordable coverage for so many of our Texas residents,” said Representative Muñoz. âDue to the region they are in, coverage for windstorms and hail can be prohibitive for these homeowners. I’m ready to begin my work on this board to make sure our Texas homeowners are covered when needed, especially after a natural disaster.
The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) was established by the Texas legislature in 1971 to ensure the availability and affordability of insurance along the Texas Gulf Coast, an area of ââthe state most vulnerable to hurricanes and other natural disasters. TWIA provides last resort windstorm and hail coverage to residents of Aransas, Brazoria, Calhoun,
Cameron, Chambers, Galveston, Jefferson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Willacy Counties as well as part of Harris County.
